From a long time ago, being Commandant of the School of Naval Cadets (1983-84), in official speeches and written orders I called the School, Monastery of the Navy. There, the relationship between the officer of P.N. with the nation, through the sea. The monk's "rudder" here becomes the Naval Cadet's "cave". But even later as Fleet Commander (1987-89), I called ships floating monasteries and islands anchored ships. The first allowed me to communicate better with the crews of the fleet on issues of mission, moral values, broadcast symbolism and defining a standard of camaraderie and lifestyle. The second made it easier for me to cooperate with the Army (its leadership) in the Aegean area. Ships and islands make up a unity for the security of Greece. This unity also has spiritual implications.
Through such a load of concerns and reflection I chose in this book to combine, with the minimal knowledge I had, the Christian message, as it comes out from images of the sea, with ancient Greek writing. Therefore, I ask the reader to see this coupling more as an effort and less as a result.
