The monastery of Optina was well-known from its foundation for the deep spirituality and discreet asceticism of the holy elders, which was founded on a real paternal knowledge of asceticism. And along the entire route of its hundred-year glorious course, until its closure by the Bolsheviks in 1923, it supplied the Russian Church with bishops, abbots of many monasteries, numerous guides of souls (starets) and above all with several saints.
The contribution of Optina monastery and hermitage to the spiritual life of Russia was enormous. He was the best representative of the intellectual renaissance that Russia experienced in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
In front of the monastery of Optina flows the river Zizdra, which the writer Sergius Nilos called "River of God", from the great reverence he had for everything related to this holy monastery and its holy elders, the famous starets.. .(From the presentation on the back cover of the book)
