The neomartyr Agathangelos was born in Ainos, Thrace, in 1800. Orphaned by his father, he became a sailor on a Turkish ship, whose captain wanted to make him his psycho child. When they anchored in Smyrna he forced him to turn Turkish and they named him Ishmael.
But Athanasios – as was his baptismal name – preferred to leave the luxurious life in the rich house of this wealthy man. He considered the "dishonor of Christ" as a greater wealth...
