George Kordis

Georgios Kordis was born in 1956 in Makrirrachis Fthiotida and grew up in Athens. He studied at the Theological School of the University of Athens (1975-1979). At the same time, he studied painting and iconography under the teacher Fr. Symeon Symeou. In the period 1987-1989 he carried out postgraduate studies specializing in Theology and aesthetics of Byzantine art at the Holy Cross Orthodox School of Theology in Boston and Fine Arts at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston. After his return to Athens, he continued his studies in engraving art and copper engraving under the engraver Fotis Mastichiadis. In 1991 he was awarded a Doctorate by the Athens School of Theology, in 2003 he was elected a Lecturer at the Theology Department of the Athens School of Theology with the subject of Iconography Theory and Practice, in 2009 Assistant Professor, while in 2012 he left the University to devote himself to painting and history temples. In the period 2003-2007 he taught as a visiting professor at the Institute of Sacred Music, Yale University, and from 2014 to 2020 at Notre Dame University, USA. He has illustrated many temples inside and outside Greece. He has exhibited his "secular" painting, deeply influenced by Byzantine and ancient Greek art, in many individual and group exhibitions in art galleries and museums. Much of his painting work is dedicated to visual dialogues with Greek writers. He has written independent studies and articles on the theology of the image, the theory of Byzantine painting and the technique of iconographic art.
