Whoever deals with the subject of love and thinks that he will negotiate it satisfactorily and thoroughly, is at least naive, since "where there is love, there is God at the same time" (Isaac Syrou, Speech A). In human love, no matter how much individuals unite, it is never possible for them to rise to the unattainable state of the Holy Trinity. Despite this, Christ, in His priestly prayer, begs His Father "that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I am in you, so that they also may be one in us" (Jn. 17.20-21). He shows us the unattainable goal, to inspire us to strive to get as close as possible.

"One Spirit... one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and father of all", insists Paul (Eph. 4.4-6). On the other hand, deep and sincere love constitutes the vertical dimension of brotherhood, somewhat corresponding to the vertical relationship of divine persons. Love in depth, vertically, sacrificially; and in breadth, for all, without exclusions. Vertically and horizontally, sacrificial! Stavros! Like the Cross of Christ. In other words, love vertically upwards, towards God; and horizontally across the width, towards people...
